Strategic Partner Interview: Dawn Coker, Ryan – Funding and Tax Expertise to Propel Chamber Members’ Growth

Written by Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce | 18 Jun 2024

As Chamber members, you’ll be excited to learn that Ryan, an award-winning global tax services firm, has entered into a strategic partnership with us to help local businesses maximise the tax breaks and financial support available to them. But this is much more than just a special offer.

In fact, as Ryan Client Services Director Dawn Coker explained when we caught up with her recently, there’s a whole programme of initiatives already underway and in planning.

These range from a complimentary innovation funding health check to monthly tax and funding one-to-one consultations with a Ryan expert, to quarterly forums, events, and a dedicated LinkedIn group.

What’s the Aim of the Partnership?

“We want to create a trusted space for businesses to talk about their issues,” Dawn says.

“We want to enable them to network, connect to our experts, and, in turn, to be introduced to other specialists who can help them through their networks.”

“The advice we give will enable businesses to operate more tax-efficiently, go ahead with projects they may not have been aware there were funding and tax incentives available for, and deal effectively with tax complexities surrounding key growth opportunities like import and export.”

Supporting Innovation at Every Turn

Ryan is known in the market for its impressive integrated suite of international tax services, including tax and VAT compliance, reclaim and consulting, tax technology and transformation, and innovation funding. Dawn sees expertise in the latter as being particularly important for Chamber members.

“At Ryan, we support both pre- and post-innovation,” she says. “So, we help businesses in sectors like engineering and manufacturing to access grant funding, but we also maximise their research and development (R&D) tax relief and make the most of capital allowances and land remediation relief, amongst others.”

“Throughout this cycle of growth, we also enable them to recover VAT and R&D tax relief where these have been overpaid or contested, respectively,” she adds.

“The Chamber’s leadership is so passionate about this new initiative,” she enthuses, “and at the same time, Bedfordshire punches way above its weight in producing the kind of engineering and manufacturing businesses Ryan can help.”

Help In a Changing Landscape

Dawn’s point about recovery speaks to challenges that many businesses are now encountering in their quest for growth: a tightening-up by government of the processes around tax credit claims and eligibility.

These include new HMRC requirements for an additional information form and a written report to accompany R&D tax relief submissions, both of which must be formally signed off by boardroom-level directors.

Needless to say, this imposes additional management overheads on the claims in question and makes the whole process more complex, more costly, and, ultimately, more daunting – something Dawn says Ryan supports businesses to overcome.

“We help businesses to deal with HMRC enquiries and to claim for and keep what is rightfully theirs,” she explains.

“This is critical because tax incentives, alongside grants, go towards funding future innovation and enabling businesses and the economy to flourish.”
