Preparing Bedfordshire businesses for the opportunities ahead

Written by Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce | 17 Jul 2026

Bedfordshire is entering one of the most exciting periods of economic growth in its history.

From Universal Destinations & Experiences and London Luton Airport's expansion to East West Rail, major regeneration projects and wider infrastructure investment, billions of pounds are set to flow into the county over the coming years. Alongside that investment will come new jobs, expanding supply chains and opportunities for businesses across almost every sector.

The opportunities are real, but they won't happen automatically. Businesses that benefit won't necessarily be the biggest or the longest established. They will be the businesses that understand how procurement works, build the right relationships and prepare well before contracts begin to emerge.

That is exactly why we launched BedX. Developed with local businesses and powered by the Chamber, BedX is helping organisations understand where opportunities will come from, how major supply chains operate and what they need to do now to compete with confidence. Because when investment arrives, preparation can make all the difference.

Opportunity is coming, but preparation matters

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding major developments is that opportunities begin when tenders are published.

In reality, supply chains are often being developed long before contracts are awarded. Buyers are identifying potential suppliers, assessing capability and building relationships well in advance of procurement processes formally opening. That is why we at the Chamber, through BedX, places such a strong emphasis on helping businesses prepare now.

Over recent months, we have delivered a series of practical webinars, bringing together experts from construction, procurement and bid writing to share first-hand insight into what businesses need to do to become supply chain ready.

Building capability before contracts arrive

The first webinar, How to Supply to a Tier 1, provided valuable insight into the way major contractors build and manage their supply chains.

Henry Mayes from Kier explained that winning work is about far more than introducing a product or service. Businesses need to understand the contractors they want to work with, identify shared priorities and invest time in building relationships. He encouraged businesses to research which organisations best align with their expertise and values rather than taking a broad approach, reminding attendees that becoming a trusted supplier is built over time.

The second webinar, How to Get Tender Ready in 2026, focused on the practical steps businesses can take to strengthen their competitiveness.

Kirsty Maynard from THSP explored what procurement teams are really looking for, from robust policies and accreditations to financial information, evidence of competence and social value. One of the strongest messages from the session was that businesses don't have to be the biggest to win work, but they do need to be ready. Having the right documentation, systems and evidence in place before opportunities arise allows businesses to focus on producing stronger submissions rather than rushing to gather information at the last minute.

The series concluded with Bid Writing Bootcamp, where Katy Berrill from Bid & Tender Support demonstrated how businesses can turn preparation into stronger bids.

Rather than relying on generic marketing language, she encouraged businesses to answer questions directly, demonstrate a clear understanding of the client's requirements and support every claim with evidence. Case studies, measurable outcomes and relevant experience all help build confidence that a business can deliver successfully, giving buyers reassurance that they are selecting a capable and reliable partner.

Turning preparation into opportunity

Although each webinar explored a different aspect of procurement, together they reinforced one important principle: preparing for major contracts starts long before a tender lands in your inbox.

It means understanding how supply chains operate, investing in your own business, keeping policies and accreditations up to date, gathering evidence of previous work and developing the confidence to present your business effectively.

These are practical steps that every business can begin taking today, regardless of size or sector.

As major developments gather pace across Bedfordshire, many of the opportunities created will sit within extensive supply chains, generating work for businesses across construction, manufacturing, engineering, logistics, hospitality, professional services and many other industries.

By helping businesses prepare now, we are helping ensure more of those opportunities are secured by local companies, strengthening both individual businesses and Bedfordshire's wider economy.
