For Michelle Crook, Founder and Director of Reactiv8 (www.reactiv8.org.uk), success has never been measured by business growth or awards alone. It is measured by the difference the organisation makes to people's lives.

That purpose was recognised at the recent 2026 SME Bedfordshire Business Awards, where Reactiv8 won the Positive Impact Award before being crowned the Overall Winner of the evening. For Michelle, however, the recognition belongs to the people around her.

"Our passion is people," she says. "Everything we do is about helping people become the best version of themselves and giving them the opportunity to build a better future."

That philosophy has shaped Reactiv8 from the very beginning and continues to drive its remarkable growth today.

A vision born in education

Michelle's career began in education, where she quickly progressed from PE teacher to become Bedfordshire's youngest Assistant Head at the time, at just 27 years old. Responsible for Student Support Services, she regularly worked with young people who were falling through the gaps.

"I saw too many young people who simply didn't fit the traditional education system," Michelle explains. "I wanted to create something that could support them in a different way."

Founded in 2011, Reactiv8 has spent the past 15 years evolving from an education-focused organisation into one of Bedfordshire's most impactful social enterprises. What began by supporting young people through education, confidence-building and employability programmes has grown into an organisation with a mission to genuinely transform lives of all ages.

Supporting the whole person

Today, Reactiv8 provides accommodation, education, employability support and practical interventions for people facing some of life's toughest challenges. Its work includes supporting people experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic abuse, care leavers, young carers, people leaving prison, individuals in police custody and many others who need practical support to rebuild their lives.

While the organisation has diversified significantly, education remains central to its work, with the team continuing to deliver around 25 education sessions every week to help young people across Bedfordshire schools build confidence, resilience and brighter futures.

Over the years, Reactiv8 has developed a reputation for supporting people who are often considered the hardest to reach, tailoring its approach to each individual's circumstances and helping them move towards a more positive future.

"We always wanted to provide complete wraparound support," Michelle explains. "Sometimes people don't just need help finding work. They need somewhere safe to live, someone to believe in them and practical support to move forward."

That vision became a reality during the pandemic, when Reactiv8 opened its first supported accommodation for families fleeing domestic abuse. What began with a relatively small funding award has since grown into a sustainable housing programme.

Today, Reactiv8 provides accommodation for around 132 people across Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, with plans to expand into Milton Keynes in the near future.

Building brighter futures

As Reactiv8 has grown, Michelle has remained focused on ensuring the organisation is sustainable for the future.

Alongside the business’ core work, complementary businesses have been established to support its mission, including property maintenance, security and property ownership. These ventures help strengthen the organisation financially while ensuring more resources can be reinvested into supporting the people and communities it serves.

Reactiv8 is also investing in Bedfordshire's future workforce through its CITB-approved Test Centre. As the only CITB-approved test centre in Bedfordshire, it enables people to gain or renew their CSCS cards and complete the qualifications required to work safely in the construction industry.

With major investment planned across the county, including the proposed Universal theme park and wider regeneration projects, Michelle believes helping local people develop the skills needed for construction careers will become increasingly important. It is another way Reactiv8 is ensuring local communities can benefit from Bedfordshire's economic growth.

The organisation has also developed the I Am Gr8 Academy (www.iamgr8.co.uk), an online personal development platform built around four key pillars: mindset, money, network and health. Designed for individuals, teams and organisations, it provides practical coaching, resources and guidance to help people build confidence, resilience and unlock their potential.

"My passion is helping people live their best life," Michelle says. "Everything we do comes back to mindset empowerment."

Whether someone is rebuilding their confidence, developing new skills or planning the next stage of their career, Reactiv8's focus is always on creating lasting, positive change.

A team driven by purpose

Although Michelle founded the organisation, she is quick to credit her team for everything Reactiv8 has achieved. "Our team are passionate about people," she says. "It's about making a positive difference every single day."

That shared purpose runs throughout the organisation. Whether supporting someone into employment, helping a family find safe accommodation or giving someone the confidence to believe in themselves again, every member of the team understands the wider impact of their work.

It is this culture, Michelle believes, that truly sets Reactiv8 apart. "People genuinely care. That's what makes the difference."

Recognition that reflects real impact

Winning the Positive Impact Award at the SME Bedfordshire Business Awards was a proud moment, but being announced as the Overall Winner made the achievement even more special.

For Michelle, the recognition was less about the organisation itself and more about shining a light on the people and communities Reactiv8 supports every day. "It means people understand the difference we're trying to make," she says.

The awards recognised years of commitment, resilience and innovation, but more importantly, they highlighted the positive impact businesses can have when purpose sits at the heart of everything they do.

For Michelle, awards and recognition are never the end goal. What matters most is the impact Reactiv8 continues to have on the people it supports.

"We've impacted so many thousands of lives and you don't always see the results because of the ripple effect," she says. "But sometimes people come back years later, and you realise just how much of a difference you've made."

That commitment to changing lives, one person at a time, is what makes Reactiv8 not only an award-winning organisation, but one that continues to make a lasting difference across Bedfordshire and beyond.
