There are some encouraging signs in the latest Quarterly Economic Survey (QES), with business confidence beginning to improve. However, for many businesses, rising costs and ongoing uncertainty are still making it difficult to plan and invest for the future.
The QES is the UK's largest independent survey of business sentiment, giving businesses a voice on the issues affecting them and helping inform decisions made by Government, the Bank of England and policymakers.
The latest findings suggest that while businesses are feeling more optimistic about the year ahead, that confidence has yet to translate into greater investment.
Confidence is returning, but investment remains low
Across the UK, 47% of businesses expect their turnover to increase over the next 12 months, up from 44% in the previous quarter. It's a welcome improvement, but the picture is less positive when we look at how businesses are performing today.
Only 29% reported an increase in domestic sales during the last quarter, while just 17% are planning to increase investment in plant, machinery or equipment, the lowest level since the pandemic.
Rising costs continue to play a major part in these decisions, with 60% of businesses concerned about inflation and 52% about taxation. Labour costs are also putting pressure on employers, affecting everything from recruitment and expansion to investment in new equipment and technology.
For many of our members across Bedfordshire, these challenges will be familiar. Businesses want to grow, but they also need to manage costs, protect cash flow and make careful decisions about where to invest.
The survey also shows that larger businesses are benefiting more from the improvement in confidence, while smaller firms continue to face difficulties with sales and cash flow. With SMEs playing such an important role in Bedfordshire's economy, ensuring they have the confidence and support to grow is particularly important.
Bedfordshire has real opportunities ahead
Despite the challenges facing businesses nationally, there is plenty to be positive about here in Bedfordshire.
Major developments, including Universal Destinations & Experiences, the continued expansion of London Luton Airport and regeneration projects across the county, have the potential to create significant opportunities for local businesses.
However, making the most of these opportunities often requires preparation, whether that's developing new capabilities, gaining accreditations or building relationships with larger contractors and procurement teams. For smaller businesses already managing rising costs, finding the time and resources to do this can be difficult.
That's why we launched BedX, our initiative designed to help local businesses become procurement ready, strengthen their bidding capability and build the connections needed to compete for future contracts.
We want to help more Bedfordshire businesses benefit from the investment taking place across our county, giving them the support and confidence to pursue opportunities that might otherwise feel out of reach.
Your voice helps shape the future
The latest QES reinforces the importance of creating a business environment that gives employers greater certainty and the confidence to invest.
As your Chamber, we continue to represent Bedfordshire businesses through the British Chambers of Commerce network, making sure the challenges facing our members are heard by those making decisions on investment, taxation and economic growth.
Every response to the QES helps strengthen that work, giving us a clearer understanding of what businesses are experiencing and the evidence needed to influence decisions that affect our local economy.
While it's encouraging to see confidence beginning to improve, businesses still need greater certainty and the right conditions to invest.
Here in Bedfordshire, we have an ambitious business community and some significant opportunities ahead. Making the most of them means ensuring businesses of all sizes have the confidence, capability and support to grow. By working together, strengthening local connections and ensuring businesses have the support they need, we can help turn that potential into real growth for our county.
If you haven't taken part in the Quarterly Economic Survey before, we'd encourage you to get involved next time. Your views help us represent the issues that matter most to Bedfordshire businesses and ensure your voice is heard where it counts.
