This year, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) is proud to be hosting its 11th annual Chamber Awards ceremony. Businesses across the country are invited to take part and showcase their talents and achievements through a series of regional heats, culminating in the national final, which takes place in London on November 27th 2014.

As voters across Britain and Europe prepare to go to the polls this week, the British Chambers of Commerce’s latest EU Business Barometer shows a substantial increase in uncertainty among UK businesses over the future of the UK’s relationship with the European Union.

Business Secretary Vince Cable is visiting automotive specialist Millbrook in Bedford today (10 April) as it is announced the company will take a share of £6 million awarded to East of England projects from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

The Government’s Regional Growth Fund will invest £300 million in 50 projects across the country to create tens of thousands of jobs and fuel business expansion, the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced today.

The Mall, Luton has announced the launch of its eighth annual Retail Factor competition this January. The competition provides small businesses, both start up and established, with the opportunity to trade rent free in The Mall for a three week period. All businesses that don’t already have a permanent presence are invited to apply.

What's it like being an SME in Bedfordshire?  Make your voice heard by taking part in the Quarterly Economic Survey (QES).  The QES is is a highly respected survey of conditions for small and medium sized businesses.   Carried out every quarter by local Chambers on behalf of the British Chambers of Commerce, the survey is consulted by The Treasury and other central government departments.

• In the three months to September 2013, the unemployment rate was 7.6%
• In the three months to September 2013, unemployment fell by 48,000 and employment increased by 177,000
• Youth unemployment (16-24) fell 9,000 in the three months to September, but was still high at 965,000, and the jobless rate was 21%
• The claimant count fell 41,700 between September and October 2013

UKTI have announced a new scheme where young entrepreneurs can apply for help setting up their business in the UK. Successful applicants will receive a 12-month start-up support package including investment, mentoring and logistical help. The scheme is available to final year university students or those who graduated in 2011 or later.

A Luton-based press manufacturer has agreed a £500,000 deal that will see it deliver a ‘world first’ to the South Coast in 2014.

The Government has announced road investment plans including some improvements that the Chamber has lobbied for with partners.

To mark the start of Export Week, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has announced the launch of a new website designed to support businesses at every stage of their export journey. 

Today (Monday) marks the start of national Export Week, designed to celebrate the exporting successes achieved by UK firms, and to encourage more businesses to take their first step towards ‘going global’. Branch Line Training is launching a new nationally recognised Fire Risk Assessment NPORS course in the New Year.    The course is designed  to enable individuals carry out fire risk assessments and is aimed at health and safety officers, site managers, supervisors and fire wardens.

• The UK deficit on trade in goods and services was £3.3bn in September 2013, unchanged from August
• There was a £9.8bn deficit on goods, partly offset by a £6.5bn surplus on services
• The trade deficit in goods and services increased markedly in Q3 2013, largely reflecting a wider goods deficit (down £4.3bn - £3.8bn goods)
