Elephantasia! Trumpeting all things Asian at Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is trumpeting all things Elephant and all things Asian with a mammoth celebration of Elephant Appreciation Weekend to help raise vital funds for elephant conservation and research projects.  The event takes place on both Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September 2012 from 10am to 5.30pm.

 

Experience Bedfordshire, the Tourism Partnership is working in partnership withCentralBedfordshireCollegeand Luton Bury Park Business Community to support Elephantasia, a unique promotion at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

This initiative is focused on encouraging the public to visit ZSL Whipsnade to see the 9 Asian elephants:  Kaylee, Lucha, Donna, Karishma, Azizah, Emmett, Izazah, George and baby Scott (10 months) that live at the Zoo and to learn more about these wonderful animals.

Plywood cut out of elephants have been created by learners from Central Bedfordshire College Art department to represent the 9 elephants currently housed at Whipsnade.  Individually designed by the learners,  the 9 Street Art pieces will be placed in prominent locations withinLuton.

The initiative is being supported by all three organisations as well as local businesses: Barclays Bank, Soccer LeagueUK, Dallow Learning Centre,Dallow Street, The Egg Free Cake Box, IBS Collection.

There will be a programme of Asian-inspired activities and entertainment. The whole family can be enthralled by a range of Asian music and dance performances. Kids can get creative in one of our hands-on workshops including mask-making, shadow puppets and chilli pot planting.

Central Bedfordshire College Assistant Principal, Shahin Khan, commented, “This is a fantastic initiative for the community and the College is proud to be a key part of it.  We look forward to the event and in working with ZSL Whipsnade Zoo on future projects”.

We have some wonderful activities in Bedfordshire and the Zoo is one of our most visited attractions. Said ViViane Vayssieres CEO of the newly formed tourism partnership, engaging with the community with such an endearing and informative promotion is a delightful idea; during the 2 days there will be Asian dancers and musicians, elephant football and many delicious exotic things to sample and experience, it will put Bedfordshire on the map for its creative diversity.
