Electric vehicles scheme

Written by Paula Devine | 12 Aug 2013

The UK’s first entirely electric pay-per-use car club has arrived in Luton. E-Car Club has been designed to provide local businesses and the wider community with the convenience and flexibility of full-sized electric cars and vans without the high cost of owning them. And all with the lowest emissions in the market today.

Since April this year E-Car have been running a pilot scheme in partnership with Luton Borough Council which has seen two Nissan LEAF deployed in the town centre and made available to council staff, local businesses and the wider public.

Prospective business members simply sign up online at www.e-carclub.org to receive their membership pack, smart card and pin number. They can then book the vehicles online, by phone or using a mobile application, for as little as an hour or as long as several days. At the time of the booking the vehicle is accessed using the smart card provided and the member simply unplugs the car from its charging post, enters their pin and drives away. At the end of each month the business will be billed for the amount of time they have used the vehicle.

With prices starting at around £5 per hour, or £45 per day, the scheme compares favourably with pool car ownership, mileage reimbursement, rental cars or taxi use. Insurance, mileage, maintenance, electricity, cleaning and breakdown cover are all included and the full administrative burden is taken on by E-Car. The service provides a rare opportunity to reduce transport spend, cut carbon emissions, improve air quality and keep the paperwork to a minimum.

For a limited period of time the Council is also providing free business memberships (including 2 drivers and 6 hours of free use) to local businesses across Luton. Simply quote the code LBC13 when you sign up to take advantage.

Further information, including the exact locations of the vehicles, can be found on the E-Car website at www.e-carclub.org.

If there aren’t any vehicles near your business currently E-Car are also interested in hearing from businesses who would like to have one or more cars provided for them on site as their network expands across the region.
