Dunstable Town Mayor’s Annual Charity Golf Day raised £350 for Home Start, supported by Essential Workwear

Written by Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce | 04 Oct 2021

It was all smiles at a charity golf day supported by family business Essential Workwear – even the weather was above par! The well-supported event at Dunstable Downs Golf Club on Thursday September 16, 2021, was the Dunstable town mayor’s annual charity golf day, and the sun was out and truly shining. This year, it was in aid of Home-Start Central Bedfordshire – chosen by incumbent mayor Gloria Martin due to her first-hand knowledge of the charity through her career as a health visitor. A raffle on the day raised £350.

Home-Start supports families who have at least one child under the age of five and are struggling for reasons including disability, poverty, mental illness and multiple births.

Dunstable-based Essential Workwear – the UK's leading branded workwear company, offering high quality custom printed and embroidered logo workwear with outstanding service – was among the businesses taking part in the golf day.

Participants – 50 in total – had the chance to fill up on bacon sandwiches and coffee before tee off at 10am. The 18-hole competition used the Stableford scoring system which, rather than counting the total number of strokes taken, involves scoring points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole. Deakin-White estate agents clinched first and second place in the individual event – and also won the team prize, played on a four-ball – and Essential Workwear’s sales and marketing director, Dorian Tranter, took third.

Steve Harris, the golf club’s captain, welcomed the mayor, who attended a meal at 4.30pm with her consort, husband Terry, and the prizes were awarded.

Dorian said: “When we first heard about the golf day and the amazing charity it was supporting, we jumped at the chance to get involved. As a family-run business, we are keen to be at the heart of our community, making a positive difference wherever possible. The golf day was so much fun! I’d highly recommend other businesses sign up in future – it’s a great way to get involved in your community and support a good cause, as well as being a great team-building exercise for colleagues. We were delighted to support the mayor’s chosen charity and look forward to working with Dunstable Town Council again.”

Councillor Martin said: “I’m delighted at the turnout for this event and for the enthusiasm shown in supporting Home-Start, so thank you to Essential Workwear and all the other businesses that took the time to get involved. The majority of my working life was spent as a health visitor, so I saw first-hand the work of the volunteers in this organisation and I know this charity needs all the support we can give it to continue its vital role. Children are this country’s future and many were even more disadvantaged by the measures that had to be taken to control the COVID-19 pandemic. The work with families that Home-Start provides will be even more necessary in the future.”

Linda Johnson CEO Home-Start Central Bedfordshire said: “What a fantastic display of community spirit, and tremendous support for our charity, from individuals and businesses like Essential Workwear. Home-Start provides a lifeline to many families struggling to cope, and it is fundraising activities like this golf day that help ensure we can continue to offer this vital support. Thank you to all those who took part."

Teams included Essential Workwear, Gosprey Cleaning and Maintenance, Deakin-White, Dunstable Town Cricket Club and Buckinghamshire Highways. Dunstable Town Council’s town clerk and chief executive David Ashlee also got involved, as did a team of Dunstable Grammar School Old Boys.

Award-winning, second generation, family-run Essential Workwear brand close to 11,000 pieces of work and safety wear every day, from their factory in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. They are an established safetywear company with an in-house PPE expert and are a BSIF registered safety supplier.
