Government cannot ignore leading role of businesses in their communities says the Chamber
08/03/2006
The Chamber, which represents businesses in Bedfordshire and Luton, has joined the British Chambers of Commerce in calling for the Government to recognise the critical part the business community plays in the regeneration of our major urban communities. Recently David Frost, Director General of the BCC, spoke at the Institute of Public Policy Research and urged the Government to acknowledge the business community’s role as the lifeblood of the economy.
Said Cheryl Smart, Commercial Director of the Chamber:
'The Chamber is part of a network of British business with their roots in the communities they serve and represent. Business people have a real stake in seeing their area prosper and the Chamber believes the leadership of the business community should be encouraged.
'The Government has placed too much time and effort concentrating on voluntary organisations as leaders of communities and deliverers of services. While the contribution of these groups is undoubtedly invaluable, we are disappointed that the role of business has not been acknowledged in recent Government discussions on the re-invention of local democracy'
Added Cheryl:
'It is wrong to suggest that the key to successful community leadership is in the hands of one sector alone. Businesses are willing to play their part and indeed may already are'
