Advice for business on bird flu threat
01/03/2006
The British Chambers of Commerce has issued advice to help businesses tackle the threat of an avian-flu pandemic.
The BCC has called for the government to gear up communications ahead of a possible avian flu outbreak with infected birds being found in areas as close as Eastern France. Business, says the BCC, must be at the centre of the government's planning for the threat of a pandemic in order to minimise the economic impact. According to the World Bank, avian flu is a 'large shadow' over the world's economy and could seriously hamper growth in some parts of the globe. While currently bird flu doesn't threaten human health, if the virus mutated it could trigger a lethal flu pandemic. Businesses would have to look carefully at the way they operate, potentially changing working practices and managing with depleted workforces.
