Chamber welcomes Eco-Towns initiative potential to marry environmental and economic development.
04/04/2008
The Chamber has welcomed an announcement that the Marston Vale has been short listed as one of fifteen potential locations across the UK for an Eco-Town. The Eco-Towns project is an initiative, lead by the Department for Communities and Local Government, aimed at providing affordable housing while achieving high standards of sustainable living.
Says Richard Collyer, Head of Economic Development.
'This is a very exciting opportunity for the Marston Vale and compliments other activity planned for the area, not least the NIRAH project.'
The Eco-Towns initiative is one of a host of plans and strategies centred around sustainability involving Bedfordshire and Luton. The Chamber is working closely with partners to ensure that the various schemes are working toward the same end. In particular the Chamber, as the area's premier business support organisation, views promoting economic prosperity, and in particular creating jobs, as central to sustainability.
Comments Richard Collyer:
'Sustainability isn't just about good environmental practices such as recycling and adequate public transport, although of course these are important aspects. A truly sustainable community is one in which economic development issues, such as making sure that there are sufficient jobs within easy reach, are acknowledged. We recognise this at the Chamber and work tirelessly with our partners to ensure that business is seen as a key part of the sustainability agenda.'
Adds Mr Collyer:
'Far too many people in Bedfordshire and Luton travel away from the area for work, adding to their carbon footprint and spending their money outside the area. An Eco-Town for the Marston Vale would be a model for how economic development and environmental targets can work in harmony
