Closure of Moore’s sends sobering message about the state our local High Streets says the Chamber

08/02/2008
The closure of Moore’s in Dunstable sends a sobering message about the state of our local high streets according to the Chamber. The Chamber, which represents businesses in Bedfordshire and Luton, was responding to news that the department store was closing after 100 years in the town due to a downturn in trade.

Said Richard Lacy, Chief Executive of the Chamber:

'Dunstable is a prime example of the decline of our local high streets. When a store like Moore's closes - a lynchpin of the retail economy in Dunstable - it sends out a message we cannot ignore about the condition of our local shopping centres.  How many long-term unoccupied units will we see before positive action is taken?'

The Chamber believes severe congestion in Dunstable is contributing significantly to the decline of the town's retail environment.    Last year the business support organisation highlighted the problem as part of Get Britain Moving, a high profile national campaign that showcased key road projects subject to severe delays.

Said Richard Lacy:

'The latest developments in Dunstable show how urgently the bypass for Dunstable is needed.  This coupled with a punitive parking regime and a frankly unimaginative approach to planning is creating a town centre dominated by estate agents, charity outlets and phone shops.'

Added Mr Lacy:

'The predicted housing growth for our region needs to be supported by jobs and with so many retailers shutting up shops we have to wonder where some of these jobs are going to come from.   It's unrealistic to expect our small town centres to compete directly with major centres like Milton Keynes but appealing, interesting town centres are vitally important, not least because they help to attract much needed inward investment and the jobs that follow.  We simply cannot afford to have down-at-heel town centres in all too obvious decline.  The Chamber is ready to engage with partners in considering how we can proactively work together to create high streets fit for the twenty-first century.'
