Airport expansion is vital to progress of UK plc says the Chamber
27/06/2008
Responding to news this week that BAA's Chief Executive has warned that Heathrow is 'jam-packed' and in need of a third runway, Richard Lacy, Chief Executive of the Chamber said:
'UK plc will suffer if we don't consider airport expansion both at Heathrow and regional airports like London Luton. It is short-sighted for politicians to suggest otherwise.'
'Of course business understands the need to protect the environment and that's why our umbrella body, the British Chambers of Commerce, has been calling for high-speed trains and improvements to our roads, not to mention all the work our members are doing to help improve the environment within their own firms.'
'But simply refusing to listen to business and the needs of the economy on the issue of airport expansion will hold back British business in the future, and I refuse to believe that the vast majority of people in the UK would want to see that happen.'
