Building a knowledge economy in Bedfordshire and Luton is vital to the area’s future economic prosperity and schemes like the planned science park at Colworth must be embraced, according to Richard Lacy, Chief Executive of the Chamber. Mr Lacy expressed concern that plans for the science park, which would create a significant number of jobs, could be under threat due to planning decisions.
Colworth Science Park is a joint venture between Goodman and Unilever. The scheme will include research centres of excellence, opportunities for open collaboration between businesses and institutions and incubation units for high-tech start-ups. The scheme has sparked significant interest with two top university business schools considering locating at the site.
Said Richard Lacy:
'This is a fantastic opportunity for Bedfordshire and Luton and one which we simply cannot allow to pass us by. Apart from the high quality jobs promised, the scheme also puts our area firmly on the map in terms of cutting-edge research and development. In an increasingly global economy, the UK's pre-eminence in research and development is an important advantage. This scheme could put Bedfordshire and Luton at the centre of the country's knowledge economy and make us a magnet for much needed inward investment and the jobs that follow.'
